So you’ve finally booked your photo shoot! But after yet-another-tantrum from the littlest member of your family, you’re wondering how on Earth you’re going to pull it off. Having kids myself, I totally understand that it can be a little nerve-wracking wondering how it’s all going to go.

Kids are naturally energetic, spontaneous and a tad unpredictable, but with a little forward planning using the tips below, you can help to ensure things run that little bit smoother on the day.

1.         Discuss the plan

Tell the kids, in an age-appropriate way, what’s going to happen on the day. Explain where they will go, who will be coming, and what they will do. You might like to get them involved by asking how they might like to style their hair, or what clothes or shoes they would prefer to wear. You can even role-play your own photo shoot at home beforehand too!

2.         Get comfy

On the topic of clothing, pick options that are classic yet comfortable. Anything too uncomfortable may make kids feel a little cranky and that is bound to show in the photos. Don’t forget a change of clothes in case of any accidents (that goes for you too, grown-ups)!

3.         Keep it light-hearted

Don’t set your expectations too high! My job is to capture the people in front of my camera as they are in the moment. Keeping things fun and light-hearted will help the photos look natural and genuine. If the kids are just not feeling it in that moment, it’s ALWAYS possible to take a little snack break, or focus on other family members for a little while. Which brings me to my next point...

4.         Bring snacks

A quick snack break can be a great circuit breaker in a meltdown situation, or for a quick energy top-up. Also – don’t forget the water bottles!

5.         Special objects add a unique touch

As part of my pre-shoot process, I will always ask if your kids have any special or meaningful objects in their lives (think a stuffed teddy, blanket, book etc). A familiar item can help kids feel more relaxed in the photo shoot environment and they may even feel proud that their favourite thing is important enough to be included in the family photos!

6.         Offer a reward

The promise of something like a small treat or even a Maccas Happy Meal on the way home can be a great reward for participating in the photo shoot. This will not only make them feel good on the day but will make them look forward to future photo shoots too!

Remember, the goal of our photo shoot together is to capture your kids exactly as they are in this age and stage of life. While we aim to capture the most genuine of smiles and light-hearted moments, it’s totally normal to get a few frowns or tears too. One day, these little memories will mean the world to you!
