As a photographer, capturing the true essence of my clients is something that is so important to me. Including pets in your photo shoot not only adds authenticity to your portraits but also highlights the unique bond and unconditional love they bring to your lives.

With that in mind, here are some tips on how to make sure your pet is part of the memories you’ll cherish forever.

1.         Plan carefully

Including pets in your photo shoot requires a bit of planning. Consider their personalities, energy levels, and comfort zones. Choose a location where your pet feels safe and relaxed, whether it’s at home, a favourite park, or a quiet beach. Chat with your photographer about your pet’s temperament and any special needs they may have so they can be prepared. Timing can also make a big difference when photographing pets. Schedule your session at a time of day when your pet is usually calm and happy (such as after a nice long afternoon walk)!

2.         Don’t forget the essentials

Pack a bag with your pet’s essentials to keep them comfortable and happy during the shoot. This can include things such as treats, favourite toys, water, leash, harness, blanket, bed, or even a special blanket.

3.         Dress for the occasion

Coordinate your outfits with your pet’s appearance for a cohesive look. If you’re feeling adventurous, matching bandanas or accessories can be cute too. Just make sure your pet is comfortable and not stressed by any new additions.

4.         Candid moments FTW

Some of the best pet photos are unposed, capturing genuine interactions and spontaneous moments. Be open to candid shots while you play, cuddle, or go for a walk with your pet. These natural moments often showcase the true bond between you and your furry friend.

5.         Pawsitive reinforcement is best

Positive reinforcement is key to getting great photos of your pet. Use treats, praise, and affection to keep your pet engaged and happy. If your pet needs a break, let them have one. A relaxed pet will make for better photos than a stressed or anxious one.

6.         Be flexible

Animals can be unpredictable, so flexibility is essential. Go with the flow and be open to changing plans if necessary. Sometimes the best shots happen when you least expect them, so keep it light and fun.

7.         Cherish the results

Once the shoot is over, cherish the results. Choose a mix of posed and candid shots to display in your home. Whether it’s a framed photo on the fireplace or a holiday card, including your pet in these memories underscores the special role they play in your life.

Including your pets in your photo shoot not only adds joy and authenticity to your pictures but also celebrates the unconditional love they bring to your life. With a bit of preparation and a lot of love, you can create beautiful, lasting memories that honour that special creature in your life.
