Capturing a beautiful shot of your children can be a rewarding yet challenging experience. Kids are always on the go, making it almost impossible to freeze that perfect moment in time. As a professional photographer and parent, I’ve learnt a few tricks over the years that can help you capture better memories of your little ones. Read on for some tips on how to elevate your photography game and preserve those precious memories forever.

1.         It’s all about the light

Light is by far the most important consideration in photography. Try to take advantage of natural light where possible, whether it be positioning your little one near a window if indoors or shooting at the beginning or end of the day if you’re outside, when light is less harsh. If you do find yourself outdoors in the midday sun however, a nice shady spot will always work too.

2.         Avoid background distractions

Looking for a simple, uncluttered background will help draw the eyes to the subject. If you’re inside, a plain wall can work well. If you’re outside, any open area such as a park, oval or beach with a clear view can make for a stunning backdrop.

3.         Use all the angles

If you’re not sure, take a few extra seconds to try some shots from different angles. Sometimes we don’t know what perspective works best until we try them all! Also, don’t be afraid to get down to the eye level of your children, this will allow you to see the world from their point of view and create a more intimate and relatable image.

4.         Look out for candid moments

While a posed photo is always cute, it’s often the candid moments that will showcase the true personality of your kids. Whether they’re laughing, playing or even daydreaming, keeping your camera ready

5.         Edit carefully

Once you’ve taken your photos, spend some time taking care of the basic adjustments such as colour balance, contrast and brightness. Sometimes the smallest tweaks can make a big difference to the quality of your final image. Don’t have professional software? Don’t fret, there are plenty of user-friendly apps out there!

Capturing great photos of your kids doesn’t always require professional equipment or software. By following my tips above, you can capture beautiful, memorable images that you’ll cherish for years. Remember the goal is to have fun and create lasting memories, so always keep a camera handy and enjoy every little moment.
