Starting your photography journey can be both exciting and overwhelming. With so much gear available, it’s crucial to know what you really need to get started. As a lifestyle photographer, I often get asked questions about which cameras and lenses are best. So, here’s a quick guide to get you on the right track!

What camera should I buy?

If you already own a camera, great! But if you are looking to buy, there are a few important things to consider. You want something that’s user-friendly but also versatile enough to grow with you as you develop your skills. DSLR and mirrorless cameras are the most popular choices for beginners, offering a good balance of ease of use and advanced features, as well as the ability to change the lens to suit different shooting situations.

I recommend setting your budget first, as this will help narrow down your options. Many reputable camera shops offer a selection of refurbished models that can save you money while still providing excellent performance. Plus, you’ll get the added benefit of expert advice from knowledgeable staff who can guide you in making the best choice for your needs.

Which lens do I start with?

I highly recommend starting with a 50mm lens because of its versatility and affordability. It's a fantastic lens for capturing portraits, landscapes, and everything in between, providing a natural field of view that closely mimics what the human eye sees. Plus, it's lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry around for everyday shooting. And because a 50mm prime lens doesn’t zoom, it encourages you to get creative by physically moving around to frame your shots. Instead of relying on zooming in or out, you'll find yourself adjusting your position, which helps you develop a better understanding of composition and perspective.
